Hey, Y'all!
Have you ever read the children's book, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie? If you have then you know it is the simple story of how one thing leads to another. This is what recently happened at our hacienda. I'd finally had enough of the dingy, dirty dining room carpet and began to impulsively move everything out of the space so I could rip out the carpet. My sweet hubby, a very practical man, questioned my timing and intent. After all, it was only a week until Thanksgiving!
That only fueled my enthusiasm to see it all gone. He could see I was on a mission and began to help me unload the space of dishes, misplaced items, and furniture. After a couple of hours we were taking in the barren space. Now what? I wanted dark hard-wood floors. He wanted porcelain tile. We found a product that helped us compromise--a dark wood looking porcelain tile.
As sweet hubby cut and lay the tile, I decided to "chalk paint" the beautiful oak china cabinets my grandfather built about twenty years ago. Removing the glass doors and asking forgiveness, I began to paint and wax both cabinets. I recently purchased vintage glass handles at a local estate sale and they fit perfectly on the china cabinet doors.
Next, I began to put some recent finds from Fredericksburg Trade Days to good use. An old drawer with it's vintage linoleum became a shelf for
some of my flower frogs, while a wonderful old dustpan from Skye and Henry's (also in Fredericksburg!) became wall art. Inside, I tucked dried hydrangea and a little 1920's recipe booklet.
A few days later we sat down in our revised dining room and enjoyed a lovely Thanksgiving meal with our family. It turns out it was a really good idea to redo the dining room--our son announced he's engaged and they want to get married next summer!
Now, we're ready to create lots of wonderful memories in our old NEW dining room.
